18th International Conference on Music Theory and Analysis
28-29-30-31 October 2021, ISSM “G. Lettimi”, Via Cairoli 44, Rimini (Italy)
Call for Papers
The Italian Gruppo Analisi e Teoria Musicale (GATM), in cooperation with the Sagra Malatestiana and the Municipality of Rimini, is pleased to announce that the 18th International Conference on Music Theory and Analysis will be held on 28, 29, 30, 31 October in the premises of ISSM “G. Lettimi” in Rimini; in case of health emergency the Conference will be held in mixed mode, or only on line on a platform previously indicated to the participants. Scholars are invited to submit a proposal on any topic related to music theory and analysis, with no distinction of genre, historical period, and geographical area. In particular, the Committee revives the “Analysis and Interpretation” session, in cooperation with RAMI (Associazione per la Ricerca Artistica Musicale in Italia), dedicated to the works of two or more participants, concerning a specific composition where there is an obvious and explicit interaction between the work carried out by an analyst and the work carried out by an interpreter. As a matter of principle, such works may be integrated with a partial or complete performance of the piece, or the pieces, examined.
Deadline and Formats on the Proposals
We invite scholars to submit a proposal (in Italian or English) no later than August 31, 2021, to this email address:segreteria@gatm.it
The following formats will be considered:
1. Individual or co-authored papers (20’ plus 10’ for discussion)
2. Pre-arranged sessions (from two to four papers, each of 20’ plus 10’ for discussion)
3. Analysis and Interpretation session (two or more participants, 40’ included the performance plus 10’ for discussion).
Anyone interested in attending the Conference as a speaker can send a proposal in Italian or English of no more than 500 words. Each proposal must clearly explain its analytical aim, the methodology applied and the contribution made to the current state of knowledge. The proposal may contain a bibliography of up to 8 titles and a list of the necessary technical equipment. The proposals of pre-organized sessions, sent by the session’s responsible, should offer an in- depth discussion on a theoretical or analytical topic presented from multiple points of view, and include a general description of 250 words, besides a text for each paper of no more of 500 words. A proposal for the Analysis and Interpretation session must add the score of the piece to be analyzed to the 500-words text; the text must summarize the analysis of the piece to be performed, highlighting in particular the different points of view of the analyst and the interpreter.
